Crown Reduction
Crown reduction is the reduction of the overall size of the crown by removing the ends of the branches evenly throughout the crown by a specified amount to leave a balanced and maintained shape true to the species.
Unless it is stated otherwise, it would be a complete reduction of the crown, not just a reduction in height with no regard to side branches.
Historically the measurements have been specified as a percentage of crown (%), but under the new BS 3998 rev2010, which came into force in January 2011, crown reduction is now specified as a measurement of how much crown is being removed in metres (m). ie: reduce overall size of the crown by 2m NOT reduce overall size of the crown by 20% as these specifications are now seen as being too vague.
Crown Thinning
A crown thinning involves the removal of a proportion of secondary branches to produce a uniform branch structure without altering the size or shape of the tree. This improves light levels and shading. This also reduces the resistance of wind and reduces the loading upon the limbs of the tree.
Crown Lifting – Crown lifting is the removal of the lowest branches or sections of the lowest branches to give a uniform shape. In the UK, Highways Regulations state that the clearance over a highway must be 5.5m and 2.5m over a footway.
Deadwood Removal – As in the name, this procedure involves the removal of deadwood from the canopy of the tree. This can either be specified as the removal of major deadwood only (anything over 50 mm) or removal of all deadwood.
Pollarding – This is the removal of all branches from the trunk to leave a standing pole or hot stand. Re-pollarding is the removal of all new growth in an urban environment such as street trees.
Fruit Tree Pruning – Without training and pruning, fruit trees will not develop proper shape. Correctly trained and pruned trees will yield high quality fruit much earlier in their lives and live significantly longer.
Coppicing – Coppicing is the art of cutting trees and shrubs to ground level or a chosen level, allowing vigorous re-growth for a sustainable supply of timber. This was a very common practice in years gone by to create fencing materials such as split chestnut post and rail and woven hurdles made from hazel.
Stump Grinding – Horsham Tree Services offer a complete stump grinding service. We have a range of machines to cater for all situations from narrow access to large difficult stumps. Stumps are ground out to a depth of 6-9 inches below ground level. Once the stump has been removed we can backfill the hole with the spoil or remove the grindings ready to replant.
